3.4.4: The institution has a defined and published policy for evaluating, awarding, and accepting credit for transfer, experiential learning, advanced placement, and professional certificates that is consistent with its mission and ensures that coursework and learning outcomes are at the collegiate level and comparable to the institution’s own degree programs. The institution assumes responsibility for the academic quality of any coursework or credit recorded on the institution’s transcript.
Narrative:
The University of Texas (UT) at Arlington follows consistent policies for accepting credit for transfer, experiential learning and advanced placement that ensure coursework and learning outcomes are at the collegiate level and comparable to our own degree programs. As a comprehensive doctoral institution, UT Arlington awards credit consistent with its mission of promoting lifelong learning through its academic programs. Therefore, the University assumes responsibility for the academic quality of any coursework or credit recorded on a UT Arlington transcript.
Undergraduate Transfer Credit:
UT Arlington awards credit for collegiate-level credit-bearing coursework, non-remedial in nature and completed at schools accredited by regional accrediting agencies and commissions. UT Arlington requires all work be supported by an official transcript issued by the awarding institution and sent directly to UT Arlington. Credit awarding procedures and policies are found in paper and online versions of the Undergraduate Catalog [1]. The online Undergraduate Catalog also houses the Common Course Number Index. [2] UT Arlington participates in the Texas Common Course Numbering System, which is designed to facilitate the transfer of lower-division academic coursework between Texas institutions of higher education. [3]
The Undergraduate Admissions website outlines the transfer process [4] and provides articulation agreements. [5] Policies regarding the transcription and transferring of credits from international institutions can be found at the Office of Admissions International student website. [6] The website also houses a transfer equivalency guide that helps students determine what courses are transferable to UT Arlington as direct course equivalencies. [7]
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) has established field of study guidelines that require UT Arlington to accept credit for coursework completed at other Texas public universities in accordance with the field of study requirements. Similarly, the THECB stipulates that students who meet core curriculum requirements at one Texas public institution have met the core curriculum requirements at any Texas public institution. Core curriculum information can be found on the UT Arlington University Advising Center website [8] and through the THECB website [9] [10] [11].
UT Arlington also awards credit by examination via Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate Examination (IBE), Advanced Standing Exam (ASE), College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) and DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST). The Office of Assessment Services website provides general information and policies regarding credit by examination. [12]
Graduate Transfer Credit:
The acceptance of graduate transfer credit is clearly outlined in paper and online versions of the Graduate Catalog. [13] Equivalent coursework completed at other institutions of recognized standing may be transferred to a master's degree program after evaluation and approval of the appropriate Committee on Graduate Studies and the Dean of Graduate Studies. No more than 9 hours of transfer credit are transferable except in professional master's programs that require more than 36 hours of coursework. In such programs, the number of transfer hours is limited to 25 percent of the total program hours. Transfer credit is accepted only for organized courses in which the student has received a grade of “B” or higher. In order to receive credit for previous coursework, students must provide an official transcript from the institution where the coursework was completed, showing the course and grade. Accepted transfer credits do not appear on transcripts of graduate students.
Transfer work is not accepted in doctoral programs. However, formal graduate-level coursework completed in the student's major area of doctoral study at other institutions granting doctoral degrees in the student's major may serve to establish student competency in those subject areas and may provide a basis for waiving some UT Arlington course requirements. Such waivers must be: (a) shown on the Program of Work, (b) recommended by the student's advisory committee and (c) approved by the Committee on Graduate Studies of the student's major and by the Dean of Graduate Studies.
Credit Evaluation:
The Office of Admissions completes transfer credit evaluations for all admitted degree-seeking students. This evaluation does not constitute approval of the credit for use toward a degree. Decisions on which transferred courses satisfy degree requirements are determined in the student’s academic department. Policies governing the evaluation of transfer credit include the following: (a) transfer credit is generally awarded for academic course credit earned from regionally accredited institutions or from institutions that are candidates for regional accreditation if the course credit was earned during the candidacy period; (b) occupational or some workforce courses from junior/community colleges, developmental courses and courses classified as below freshman level by the sending institution are not transferable and will not count toward a degree; (c) junior/community college courses transfer as lower-division (freshman or sophomore) credit, undergraduate courses from senior colleges transfer at the same level, lower- or upper-division, as they were taken, and graduate level course work may be transferred as upper-division credit at the written request of the student; (d) use of transfer credit toward a degree may be limited by the student’s academic department; (e) credit-by-examination earned at other institutions is treated as transfer credit only if the sending institution posts such credit on the student’s transcript with regular catalog course numbers and with a grade of at least C, with the symbol CR, or with a similar designation representing credit earned without letter grade; (f) evaluation of military transcripts are done on a case-by-case basis; (g) credit in which a grade of D was earned is not transferable and will not count toward a degree and (h) grades earned at other institutions are not averaged with grades earned at UT Arlington to determine the student’s internal University grade point average.
